Diamond: Visionary dreamers are leading disruptive ventures. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator went viral and became the ultimate workplace vibe check, with over 50 million people taking it. When she discovered Carl Jung's book Psychological Types, she was like, "OMG, this is lit!" "and like, she totally integrated his research into her typology, you know?" Both mom and daughter, now married to Chief, kept peeping people and tagging their "types" for the next two decades. (OMG, Isabel stayed with her "incompatible" boyfriend for 61 years, like, what?). OMG, just after the start of World War II, Isabel was reading an article in Reader's Digest about how women were flooding the workplace and having a difficult time finding the right job. That was crazy! She realized her mother's research could help women find jobs that fit their personalities.
Isabel began flexing on everyone she could find, including friends, classmates, and coworkers.
I'm like, completely obsessed with Myers-Briggs and other tests, you know? (I'm an ENTP in Myers-Briggs, an ID in DISC, and a Type 7 in Enneagram.) I swear, these things help me connect with myself better, you know? And, as someone who is occasionally accused of being impatient, I know they've helped me at work realize that not everyone is motivated in the same manner. Perhapz That's why, a few years into running Endeavor, after realizing that almost every entrepreneur I met kept hitting familiar roadblocks in his or her quest to go big, I was like, "I gotta do something similar, you know?" I was like, "Yo, I'm gonna make this lit personality test that can help entrepreneurs figure out their best and worst traits, ya know?" The process took several years. First, my team and I analyzed the thousands of entrepreneurs we've interviewed over the years, as well as the fifty international selection panel events where we debated candidates' vibes at critical moments. Then we brought in a lit team from Bain & Company, who sent a detailed questionnaire to 200 of our entrepreneurs.
These types are completely different from the species I've been discussing so far, you know?
gazelle, skunk, dolphin, and butterfly - which are all completely related to the vibes of your work, fam. The profile types are all about your vibes: your strengths and weaknesses as a boss; your lit moves as a game changer and your not-so-great ones. The more you understand your entrepreneurial instincts, the more energized you will be. That is so true at the stage I want to turn to in this section: going lit. Many books about entrepreneurship are pulling the same stunt, and it's hella simple. One, they're bringing in romantic comedies in Hollywood, you know? They completely depict the founders' first romantic encounter, the hilarious roadblocks they face on their way to the altar, and the epic drive into the sunset after their first major victory. From there, it's lit AF, happily ever after, fam. If only, family. "Starting a company is like getting hitched," said Georges Doriot. He's like the pioneer of venture capital. "Most of the problems are like, totally discovered after the honeymoon is like, so over." Yo, in this section, I'm going to help you solve your post-honeymoon problems. OMG, in the next few chapters, I'm going to spill the beans on the day-to-day struggles of running a fast-paced business, such as honing your leadership skills, finding and retaining the best people, and gaining mad insights from mentors. But first and foremost, I'd like to emphasize that knowing your true self is the first major key to success. Just as all the new people entering the workplace in the 1940s had to be comfortable with their identities, so do all the hustlers entering the workplace today. Every entrepreneur has a vibe, you know? What is your vibe?
DIAMONDS
Steve Jobs, yesss! Mark Zucc. Yes, Sergey Brin and Larry Page! Ted Turner, but keep it lit. George Lucas, family. Elon Musk, family. Diamond entrepreneurs are total legends who create insanely bold, disruptive businesses. They're charismatic evangelists who capture everyone's attention when they talk about changing people's lives. It is lit! Diamonds are like, imagine a lit world, and then inspire others to make it happen. But diamonds don't always have a clear path for growth, you know? They can be extremely unstable and unpredictable. When diamonds slay, they can be game changers. However, when they fail, everything happens so quickly and chaotically. This entrepreneur, Brahms Chouity, is flexing his hustle! Dude grew up in Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, studied hospitality in Switzerland, and founded numerous businesses in the Middle East, ranging from interior design to finance. Talk about a boss move! He even showed off by opening the Saudi office for a popular brand of British sports cars. He moved fast, acted quickly, and made about 90 trips per year. Then, in 2010, when his wife said, "I'm preggo," Brahms said, "I'm out, taking a sabbatical, fam." His wifey was overjoyed. Bain followed up with mad interviews; we crunched the data and debated. Finally, we settled on four entrepreneur personality vibes. Stars are charismatic people who create personality brands. Transformers are changemakers who revitalize traditional industries. Rocketships are analytical thinkers who make significant brain improvements.
